New Orleans could see hottest day on record Wednesday; Entergy and Cleco officials provide tips

Wednesday could compete for the hottest day on record in the New Orleans area.

WDSU reached out to Entergy and Cleco officials, the two companies who provide our energy source, with how to prepare for a day with temperatures of 102 degrees.

First and foremost, you want to make sure you are hydrated and should avoid being outside if you can.

The hottest times of the day are between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., and Entergy and Cleco reps encourage you to change those filters in your home in the meantime, along with preparing to close your blinds and curtains so you do not heat up objects in your home.

We asked officials with both Cleco and Entergy about "brownouts" caused when conditions are extreme and companies lose the ability to provide electricity to every home. Both companies say they are prepared for this, closely monitoring the reliability of their electric systems around the clock.

Officials also encourage you to keep your thermostat at 78 degrees to avoid and extremely high bill.

"I always tell customers the recommended temperature is 78 degrees. When you set it to that, that's where the savings come in. Realistically, with the heat we've been experiencing for weeks now., I tell customers all the time, every household is different. You have to do what works for you and your home."

Another tip from Cleco and Entergy, you may want to seal up any holes inside of doors that could let hot air in and cool air out.
